Around Dhaulagiri Trek

Around Dhaulagiri Trek

The Dhaulagiri Trek is one of the most challenging trekking trips in Nepal and is popular with those with some experience on icefields. Dhaulagiri is the sixth highest mountain in the world at 8167m. No doubt you will have a very exciting trek here and experience the high mountain ambience.

The trek begins with a bus ride from Kathmandu to Beni. Once on foot, we walk through cultivated fields, forests and villages, where various ethnic groups reside, namely Gurung, Chhetri and Magar etc. After a few days we reach 'Italian' Base Camp, from where we can see exciting views of Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV& V. We need to rest for few days to acclimatise to the altitude.

Once we are ready, we head on to Dhaulagiri North Base Camp and continue our trek to French Pass (5360m) and Dhampus (also called Thapa) Pass (5244m). In between we might encounter semi-wild yak herds, mountain sheep or even the elusive snow leopard. Dhaulagiri, Thorong Peak and Annapurna I are our constant companions. Subsequently, we descend to Marpha, a beautiful village in Mustang district, situated below the majestic mountain peaks of the Nilgiris. We are now in the Kali Gandaki river valley in the world's deepest gorge and soon we reach Tatopani ('hot water' in Nepali), where we can have a bath in the hot springs. From Tatopani, we ascend to Ghorepani, then head down to Pokhara and finally back to Kathmandu.
