Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak Climbing

Embark on a wonderful adventure with Yatra Himalaya to Island Peak, climbing and trekking into the heartland of the Khumbu, Gokyo and Everest Base Camp regions. Island Peak (6189m) is one of the main climbing peaks in the Everest region, with an impressive and highly glaciated West Face that rises from the Lhotse Glacier. An ascent of Gokyo Ri (5357m) and Kala Pattar (5545m) proves a good acclimatisation hike and gives you magnificent close-up views of the world's highest mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and more. Further acclimatisation hikes take us over the less-frequented Cho La pass (5420m) and Kongma La Pass (5535m) before ascending one of the most popular peaks in the Everest region.

The mountain was named "Island Peak" in 1952, due to its striking location in the middle of the Chhukung valley, like an island in a sea of ice. It was renamed Imja Tse in the early 1980s, though its original name is still more popular. From the base camp, it may take two or more days to scale the peak, depending on weather conditions. Experience tells us that it is better to spend two nights at the base camp for acclimatisation and training and then attempt the Island Peak summit in one push directly from the base camp. The journey begins and concludes at the world famous Lukla airstrip in the Everest region.
