Kanchanjanga Trekking

Kanchanjanga Trekking

Kanchenjunga is one of the most thrilling trekking destinations in Nepal. Such a trek is hardly found anywhere else in the world. It is one of the most unspoiled trekking trails in the eastern part of Nepal, as it was only opened to trekkers in 1988. Kanchenjunga (8586m) is the world's third highest mountain, lying on the border of Nepal and Sikkim (India). It offers a varieties of landscapes, cultures and panoramic views of the Himalaya, including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga itself, four of the world's five highest mountains.

The Kanchenjunga area is inhabited by Sherpas who have a different culture and traditions from those of Solu Khumbu district. Limbu, Rai, Chhetri and Brahman are other ethnic groups of this region. There are monasteries, chortens, temples and mani prayer walls across the region. Following the trekking route, blue sheep are often found here and it is also believed that the abominable snow man 'YETI' exists in the region. With all these features, Kanchenjunga is likely to entice the inquisitive trekker, like those who join a trek with Yatra Himalaya. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) is spread over an area of 2035 sq. km. and is rich in its diversity of wildlife, including the much sought-after snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, red panda and various species of birds.

The Kanchenjunga Trek begins from Suketar-Taplejung, which is accessible by air, or from Basantapur by road. The route passes through lush rhododendron forests and climbs on to high alpine terrain beyond the village of Ghunsa. Throughout the route, you can view the astounding scenery of the Kanchenjunga South Face. Subsequently we head to Lapsung La pass, Selele Pass and trek on to the Yalung Glacier. Finally we reach Kanchenjunga Base Camp. All the treks to Kanchenjunga return to Kathmandu from the Suketar-Taplejung airstrip.
