Langtang Trekking

Langtang Trekking

The Langtang trekking region is the third most popular destination for hikers in Nepal, especially with Yatra Himalaya. Trekking in the Langtang region, north of Kathmandu, combines one of the more remote and spectacular valleys in Nepal with the high, sacred mountain lake of Gosainkund, as well as the area of Helambu to its south. Langtang is a narrow valley that lies just south of the Tibetan border. It is sandwiched between the main Himalayan range to the north and a slightly lower range of snowy peaks to the south. Langtang Lirung (7246m) lies to the north; Gang Chhenpo (6388m) and Naya Kanga Ri (5846m) lie to the south and Dorje Lhakpa (6966m) to the east of the valley.

Our Langtang trek begins in the forests of the lower Langtang valley. Many of the villagers are originally from Tibet and are related to the Sherpa people. In days gone by, this route was an important trading route with Tibet, and even today trade with Tibet is on-going. We trek through Langtang National Park, but wildlife is not always easy to spot in the dense forest. With luck we might encounter monkeys, musk deer, pika and the national bird of Nepal, the colourful Danphe. Our main destination is Kyangjin Gompa (3740m), which is situated below the impressive glaciers of Langtang Lirung. There is an airstrip at Chhaldang, a short distance east of Kyangjin, but no scheduled flights to Kathmandu.
