Makalu Trek

Makalu Trek

Makalu (8463m), the fifth highest peak in the world, is sure to become a popular trekking destination in Nepal. Situated in the east of the country, it is protected by the Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Project. Many species protected here are on the verge of extinction. The park, covering 2330 sq. km., was established in 1992. It also includes the peaks of Chamlang (7319 m) and Baruntse (7129m). Not only does the Makalu-Barun National Park offer remarkable mountain scenery, but also a huge variety of flora and fauna. Plants of all major ecological zones – tropical, subtropical, temperate, alpine and sub-alpine – are found within the national park, which is also home to a rich variety of wildlife.

This trek is a naturalist's paradise, including beautiful mountains and pristine forest. It is home to warm-hearted people with rich and varied customs. The early part of the route passes through the low-altitude, dense forest and terraced hillsides of the Arun Valley, which drains the eastern part of Nepal. Many diverse tribal groups reside in unity in the Makalu-Barun National Park. Of those clients who make the effort to visit this region with Yatra Himalaya, all speak in glowing terms about the area.

The trek begins from Tumlingtar, reached by an exciting flight direct from Kathmandu. From Tumlingtar we head to Mane Bhanjyang. We discover valleys where many different ethnic communities have long preserved their unique cultures. The trail passes through lush forest, subtropical valleys, flora and fauna that are nature's wonderful showcase. We proceed on our journey to Chinchilla and continue to Num, Seduwa, Tashigaon, Khongma and Mumbuk. Then we reach Neh Kharka. It is necessary to rest here for acclimatisation and then, once we are ready, we proceed to Yak Kharka. Finally we reach Makalu Base Camp. After exploring this high sanctuary of mountains, we return via Neh Kharka, Mumbuk, Khongma, Seduwa and Num. The trek concludes with a flight from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu.
