Saribung Trek

Saribung Trek

This trek is an exceptional adventure, following very remote trails between Upper Mustang and the Phu valley north of Annapurna II. Being high on the Tibetan plateau, the scenery is completely different from most of the major routes in Nepal. This trek could be described as one of the most beautiful high routes of Nepal.

The route heads north from Jomsom along the Kali Gandaki, which is called the Mustang Khola this far north. The trail heads to Lo Manthang and then heads east to Yara and the mysterious Luri caves and its 'lost' Buddhist paintings. Into the desolate high and wild country east of Luri the trail soon heads southwards to the Damodar Kund Lake, an isolated pilgrimage site of Shiva. From the lake the ascent is tough, often on snow and even glacial icefields, to the Saribung pass (6055m). The second part of this trek takes us into the beautiful landscapes of upper Phu below Bhrikuti Peak. Phu is an amazing sight, with its crumbling citadel built on a stunning outcrop. High above is the Tashi monastery where blue sheep are often seen, perhaps keeping away from the elusive but active snow leopards.

Trekking in the Phu valley gives trekkers the feeling of being outside time and outside the world. Here nature is found at its most untamed. This is a land of abandoned settlements, rugged yak herders and circling vultures. The region is noted by geologists for its abundant fossil record, as shaligrams from the long-disappeared Tethys Sea. This trek requires all to be in exceptionally good physical condition, since the pass is very high and conditions can occasionally get treacherous. This trek needs good logistics, excellent crew knowledge and good planning, all attributes provided by Yatra Himalaya.
